ok, im back with a whole set of new problems. i now have the seca turbo running, it drives great, starter clutch may not sort itself out with is not good, but at least it starts. ok, i'll give everyone the run down on what i have done to this bike and what i already checked, and well see if it can be figured out. first idleing, it idels ok, but not smooth, kinda like it has a cam in it like a big block chevy, lol, no i have not tuned the carbs, i did play with the jets a little, but that is not to big of a deal, around town it drives great, i can get it to boost about halfway on the boost meter, and seems to have ok power, now lets get to the "whats going on" part. getting on the freeway, i rol hard on the throttle, boost gauge tears into the red zone...and it acts like it is not getting fuel, pops and backfires from what sounds like the carbs. it cruses ok from what i can tell. carbs are clean, passed the "clunk" test, fuel pump is working but just in case i hard wired it with no change.i dont see any vacuum leaks, the carb boots look ok, turbo end shaft play feels fine, with only 16k on it, i am at an impass as to what could be causing this. any ideas as to what i can check, i would be a very happy man. im tired of messing with these bikes. 2 months is too long, lol.

I am not in tune with the turbos but here is my best answer. Start with tuning the carbs. If the carbs are out of synk the things more than likely are not getting the amount of fuel it needs at boost pressure and non boost pressure for that matter. Synk the carbs and go from there. No sense chasing a problem when you know another one exsists that may be causing it. My two cents

I agree with samsr. Clean those carbs up nice then synchronize the carbs (with or without YICS tool - big debate!) and then colortune. These may seem like minor things but they have a huge impact.

Also, what year turbo do you have - 82 or 83 year? You should put your bike into your signature.

I'm not a turbo expert either but after checking the carbs, maybe the blow off valve is stuck - this (in my interpretation) would cause the boost to spike shoving more air than fuel causing a lean backfire and loss of power.

If its getting fuel check to see if the fuel pressure regulator is working or not. Those can go bad. I have heard of people spraying silicone spray in them then using 20 psi of air and they seem to work again.
Secondly make sure that your battery is freshly charged. Make sure spark plugs are new. If you havent replaced them, do it. I chased the same problem as you are having now and when I changed plugs, voila it worked.
Also take apart the fuel cap. Take it all the way apart, I think there are 4 screws, 2 showing and 2 under another cap. There is a stringy piece of cork gasket in there. Take out the cork and put it all back together. Also some people have drilled a tiny hole in there fuel cap to prevent the tank from vacuum lock.
Make sure that your petcock is clean and make sure that there is no debris in the fuel pump.
If you take the end off of the fuel pump there is a small screen in there, Take that off and clean it up.
Where in Ca do you live?? there are a few of us in the state and always glad to help out.

ok, an update as to where i am, i took the seca for a good ride, and played with the throttle a bit. if i roll the throttle back all the way till it stops, it cough's and spits, from what sounds to be the intake, if i back off just a little bit, it bosts up almost perfect, auto meter guage says 11 pounds. what could this be?!?! carbs out of sync?

I'll be in the greater Sacramento area June 30th to the 3rd. I'm not completely mobile but I will bring my YICS, Colortune, and gauges. I expect to meet up with Smokamoto for a rootbeer at the A&W out off of 80 and Elkhorn/Madison Avenue. Date and time to be determined. I do not expect to get down the 99 (we're taking the 5 at 10PM to avoid traffic) at any point but if you can make it to Sac, I'll be ready to twiddle and look around at your machine. Wish my car had a hitch, I'd trailer the FZR up. I'll see if the Mrs. will let me wander off for a day.
