I have just got a sweet '85 xj 700. I am have a fuel leaking problem. When the bike is sitting in the garage it is leaking fuel through the over flow tube under the bike.
Like I stated before, I just got this bike and it seemed to me that the owner took really good care of her. He took it to the shop before he sold it to me and had the carbs cleaned and the petcock worked on. I asked if him if they rebuilt the petcock and he told me no. That the mechanic just stretched the spring a little.
What should I check first???? 8O

    Thanks

Get a rebuild kit for the petcock asap. stretching the spring doesn't work for long.

    Brother ...

    Its SUMMER.

If you can afford it ... just Pop for a NEW Petcock ... you'll be good for another 20-years!

Later, get a kit and rebuild the Old one.
You'll have an EXCELLENT start to your collection of spare parts!

I went down after posting and checked the oil. And whew! smelled like a gas tank!! So I just got back and picked up some new oils, filter, and yes I did spring for a new petcock. I just hope that it isn't back ordered. 8)

    thanks

I am glad to hear someone say this. I hae been trying this with my petcock and it works for a day or two then back to leaking. I think we need to rephrase this advice as temporary and only for getting back home or until a petcock can be rebuilt or replaced.

Shiny. Me thinks the PO did take care of it.

Just checking, but it's not on prime, is it?
