ignition problem

Heres the scenario. I go to start my bike, it fires up, and stalls cuz its cold. Go to push the start button again and nothing. I can hold the button in a for five to ten seconds and it may start, or it may not. Depending on frankys mood at the time. It happens with a full charge on the battery, when its cold, when its warm. Checked the switch box, all looks good. I'm thinking starter, or starter relay. Any ideas?
Thanks guys. By the way, its 40 here today, started Franky up and couldn't resist taking it out for a little ride. Went about five miles, laughing all the while with a big fcking grin on my face.

 

check all the connections? Stock fuse box?

 

i would first check the contacts in the start button.

 

Do you get a click in the starter relay (solenoid)? If not, then see if you are getting the necessary 12V signal to the relay from your start button.

If you are getting voltage but not 12V, you could be losing voltage to the various connectors going from the battery-through the fuse box, to the ignition switch, back down to the fuse box, back up to the starter button, and finally back down to the starter relay. Any of those connectors and contacts can cause a voltage drop that is additive. Clean them all. Without a sufficient voltage signal, the relay will not close.

Also, if everything dims when you press the starter button, but there is no response from the starter relay, and your battery voltage plummets, you may have a weak battery, which has high impedance (regardless of charge level). High impedance means that the voltage at the terminal will drop when a load is applied, and if it's lower than required to engage the relay, it won't.

If your starter relay isn't getting and voltage, look for a wire in that path that is completely disconnected, or some involvement of the starting safety circuit (kick stand switch, clutch switch, neutral switch, and relevant relays).

If your starter relay doesn't click, even with 12V signal applied directly, or if it clicks but doesn't turn over the engine, but jumping it's terminals turns over the engine, then suspect the starter solenoid.
