hello this is my first post and i'm still learning the website so hopefully i'm not posting something that has been posted already.

i own a 82 Yamaha xj650 maxim and i have just bought a new battery i let it charge about half a day and on my voltmeter it reads 13.36v so knowing i have a good battery i install in on the bike, i turn the key( it doesn't seem to feel like turning my key does anything it doesn't feel like a click or feel like it turns all the way) and press start...and... nothing, no lights, the starter doesn't turn, no clicks, anything. now before i replace the battery it would click really fast and i tested the battery and of course the old one was dead. now i have checked all the fuses and relays. so now i'm left with the powerlock on the left side of my bike now i put the key in that and it doesn't stay turned(idk if its suppose to) so in the many attempts i have broken the key inside the powerlock.

so how do i remove the powerlock? i really don't want that feature anyway cause i have my own in mind. also my ignition switch doesn't feel to me like it works i don't feel anything when i turn the key. how do i check if this is bad?

The "powerlock" is just a chain lock for locking your bike to a stationary object. It "locks" onto the bike; but it has nothing to do with the operation of the electrical system.

The key won't stay turned in the power lock..... it turns while you have your hand on the key, you slide it off the post, release the key....then wrap the chain around what ever you want to secure the bike to. Then you turn the key again to push the lock back onto the post and remove the key. Walk away from the bike and the bike is securely locked to whatever you wrapped the chain around.

In order. To completely remove the power lock from the bike, you will need to go to the opposite end of the chain and cut the link lso that you can remove it. But like. Fritz said, it has nothing to do with the electrical running of the bike.

okay so from curiosity i just went out to look at the power lock again and noticed the wires running around the power lock go to my rear lights, and the wires running too the power lock are two bare larger wires that are tied around a bare piece of chain.... could this be a rigged ground....

Oh golly. Sounds like a possibility; but it's also a new level of PO creativity if it is.
