So I picked up a '82 650j a couple of weeks ago on the cheap, the guy that I got it off of swore it ran... not so much. After a new set of plugs, replacing the clutch basket, tinkering with the tranny to get it to shift properly, and fixing the aforementioned owners various ghetto engineering mistakes; I fianlly got her to fire up today! It's my first bike so it's a learn as I go project, but it's been fun so far. Just wanna say thanks to all the questions i've had answered by trolling around the forums. I've added a few pics of my progress so far and will add more when i get a chance.

Here she is as soon as I got her home.

    wes,

I'm glad you changed the plugs (those are the wrong ones). BP7es is the correct plugs. The HT caps are resistant. Unless you replace the caps with non-resistant caps (I wouldn't ) IMO don't use BPR7es plugs. Hope this helps.

Edit: What is that cable running down the right side of your bike? Also, you might want to check your jet sizing (modified exhaust). Is the air box on there?

Yeah, previous owner had a set of mix matched plugs installed lol so installed a new set of BP7es's. The cable running down the side is the original clutch cable (replaced it with a new one when I was overhauling the clutch). Yeah the exhaust is a screaming eagle 2 and don't have the original air box but I do have some pod filters for it. Any suggestions on figuring jet size to offset the modded exhaust and pod filters? The carbs are deffinetly my next project.

    wes,

To my understanding because xj's have CV carbs there is a air-flow into the ventura (the kidney shaped part of the carbs intake) issue with installing pods. Search and read the MOD Forum for more info on pods. IIRC Chacal has a nice write-up in the Information Overload thread. Sorry, I can't answer your question but for what it's worth you need a starting point. Find out what jets are currently installed and check the needles for correct type (s/b Y10) and see if they have been shimmed. Those mismatched plugs may have been intentional to compensate for the problems with trying to get the correct air/fuel mix, maybe not. If it were me I would try to get a hold of and install a stock air box and boots and dial it in with that exhaust. Then I would chop the air box boots and add them to the pods to help stack the air flow through the pods. Then I would use the formulas and information on this site to try to dial it in with the pods installed. Others might chime in. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info man, I'll look into it. Works been crazy but hopefully I'll get a chance to do some more research and tinker with it my next day off.
