Been a while since I started this bit of my project. Had to put it on the back burner for a while but I'm back at it and figured I'd update y'all.

Link to the album. (I'll try to keep this album up to date as I add pictures in this thread's replies)

I got the tank split at the pinch-seam and I'll be working on sharpening up the edges of the dish as well as smoothing them out. I do want to keep some of the dimpling, but there's some unevenness I have to take care of. I dunno, I might just smooth it completely. We'll see. Once that's done, I'm trimming what's left of the pinch-seam from the tank bottom and welding it all back up.

Haven't decided if I want to change the fuel fill yet. I kind of dig the flush-mount deals but I'm on the fence at the moment.

    Re: Tank dishing progress.

    Mini update:

Got the badge recesses beat out on the right side dish.

Still working on general evening and light smoothing. I'm really liking the hammered texture so the dimples will remain. The smoothing is really just taking care of shallow areas of the dish and whatnot.

Also decided to add a recessed fuel sight gauge. Still working out how I want to go about that. Thought up a few options but I'm feeling that I might need to hammer-form the recessed channel to achieve my desired effect.

I'll try to post more pictures soon.

    Picture update:

Today's agenda was to beat the badge indents out of the tank.

First thing I had to do was remove the material left over from the tab that the badge bolts on to.

After that was done I could begin beating the badge indent out.

    This indent...

I did this by working the metal with a body hammer and anvil.

I find it somewhat important to take a break every now and then and ponder the possible alternate uses of the part I'm working on...

Such as a helmet for speed skating:

or as a headdress signifying your role as local chieftain.

So after asserting my dominance to lower ranked tribe members, I got back to work.

Here you can see that I've just about taken the indent on the left out.

And the exterior after working the dent out.

In that last picture you can see the unevenness of the dish. This will be corrected but must wait until I get rid of that badge dent.

And here's a couple pictures showing the right-side dish with the badge indent removed completely.

And that's where I'm at for now.

    Mini-update:

Dishes are just about done. Having the tank halves media blasted tomorrow, then I gotta make the sight-gauge recess and weld it all back together.

My tank has been put on the back burner. New motor going into my Dart, buttoning up the xj motor, waiting on a couple bungs to arrive as well as finding a TIG setup to borrow...

I need a bigger shop space. haha

This is looking promising. Have you considered widening the tank while you have it all split up? Very interested in the welding process to come.
