I find the seat of my 82 550 Maxim to be very wide, and uncomfortable through the *ahem* crotch area. Is there any way to shave the seat down to be narrower?

you can do that yourself with a few simple tools. Some of the folks here have simple used a carving knife to get the desired shape they want and then used a grinder to smooth out the edges. The one thing I would say to remember though is look at how wide the frame is under the seat. It isn't that much narrower than the seat its self.

I noticed that the seat is fairly lean around the frame, and that it's the frame that is wide. Any little bit would help! Is the seat pan metal or plastic?

I think plastic. The cover is stapled to the pan, so I dont think it's metal.
