Just replaced rear brake shoes on Kawi EX 500. During reassembly sprocket assembly back into hub seemed to have lots of free play regardless of where it was reinserted.

Upon test ride there is a lag time (jerking feel) prior to initiating power to rear wheel. Actually somewhat expected given the slop I noticed during reassembly.

Chain tension seems to be within normal range.

    Can anyone offer ideas?

I'm somewhat confused. The sprocket doesn't have to be removed to fit new brake shoes. Since it appears that you took the sprocket and cush drive off, did you inspect the cush drive pads for wear and hardness?

They are drum, since I noticed the year of his EX is in his sig line. People call shoes pads, and pads shoes all the time, so I thought I'd make sure before giving advice.

It is indeed drum brake .... so shoes it is. I removed axle and wheel, the sprocket and cruch drive (?) is loose at this time.

Since it was fine prior to brake shoe replacement I did not inspect the sprocket side.

I'll entertain all comments including humor.

    Have a look in the fiche: http://www.kawasakipartshouse.com/oempa ... n-coupling

I'd inspect the cush drive; and be sure collar #42036, which looks like it goes into the BACK of the bearing that's in the sprocket/hub, hasn't gone missing.

This is the equivalent piece in the 550 rear hub, which is of a similar design; both pics from the "cush" side:

Just doesn't seem like there's much (as in many parts) that could go wrong. I'm clueless so any comments / ideas are welcome.

I found the problem ..... hidden under clutter in the garage. The damper had fallen out and I had not the experience to recognize it needed to be in there.

    I'm an idiot!

Next time I offer advice on my Maxim in the forum ..... take it with a grain of salt.

    Thanks for everyone's help.
