    Hi everyone,
A friend of mine helped me put together my old xj650 which had been junked in 2002. He rebuilt the carbs for me and helped with other stuff too. I'm in the process of registering and have been riding it a little bit. I'm kind of concerned that it's not really running to it's full potential. It kind of bogs on takeoff until it's warmed up a lot. Isn't this a sign of something being a little off? How much time should it take an air-cooled bike to warm up in Los Angeles where it's rarely colder than 60 degrees? Seems to me like it should be warm enough to run right in a couple of minutes at the most. Am I wrong?

My Seca 900 took 5 minutes to warm up from 40 degrees, I suppose 2-3 minutes would be enough for your bike in your location.

I warm up until I let the choke go away...depending on OAT it takes a few minutes give or take

Have you checked the valve clearances yet?

That can and will affect "warm up time" as well as how it runs once warmed up. It's also the most-ignored maintenance item despite being the most critical.

READ THIS: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html If you haven't personally, visually inspected the rear shoes stop trying to ride it.

If you actually want to use this bike for transportation, you're going to need to properly recommission it or it will just continue to be one "problem" after another. I know that's not what you want to hear; it's just the honest sorry truth of the matter. Plan to spend around $600 ~$800 to get it safe and reliable, if you do all the work yourself.

And get a service manual. You're going to need it.
