    Hey,

I have a 82 xj550 just a bit over 30k. Among other strange noises one that bothers me is this harmonic wave sound. It happens around 3 or 4k RPM only while at constant throttle, just cruising. My best description would be it sounds kinda like a didgeridoo. Um like this "waaaohhhhwaaaaohhhhh..." Its a harmonic wave. It's not terribly loud but kind of annoying. Its also not bad enough that I can feel it in my seat or anything. It sounds like it is coming from directly below my seat. Is this normal for my model bike? I have not ridden any other bikes so I just dont know.

    Thanks

If it really and truly sounds like someone playing a Didgeridoo ... I'd be spooked.

I'd wash the bike with Holy Water, hold a seance and book an Exorcist to go riding with you!

Other than that ... check that the Intake Port beneath your seat is not obstructed.
    Check the air cleaner; too

    ha ok.

i'll send the business to my local witchdoctor instead of my mechanic.

Air filter LOOKS good. I want to say the noise is coming from below the intake and more mechanical.

Guess its not a NORMAL noise. I don't want to be normal anyway.

My '83 550 has the same friggin noise! It's driving me nuts, and is the only thing that keeps me from saying "my bike runs perfect".

I've listened to the damn thing with a mechanic's stethoscope, but the problem is.. the noise is only there under very light load, between 3 and 4K like you said. Hard to listen for mechanical noises while riding :-(

I recently found that my #4 carb had a clogged idle jet. When I fixed that, the noise subsided quite a bit but it's still there. I've tightened the cam chain (well, I think it was tight to begin with), I've shimmed the valves... I even looked at the bike VERY STERNLY like Chuck Norris would... No dice.

The noise doesn't appear till the bike warms up, right?
