I recently bought an 82 xj750, the previous owner had switched the throttle and choke cables so it was reving to redline so I got it pretty cheap. After fixing that i changed the oil, replaced the fuel line and vacuum line to the petcock, and replaced the key switch since after losing the key the PO decided to punch it out and use a screwdriver to start the bike.

It now starts but idles at about 500 rpm rather than 1050 as I've seen it should be. It eventually dies unless the throttle is opened up a little and held open, I've tried to adjust it using the adjuster on the back of the carbs but I'm not sure how far I would need to go. I also noticed that the mixture adjustment screw is missing from the first carb. When plugged with a screw to just prevent too much air from entering the system it runs with the throttle opened up but obviously that isn't going to keep the mixture set. I'm having a hard time finding a new one. Does anyone here know where I can find one?

After that I plan on syncing the carbs and kind on going from there. This site has been great for info and I'm very appreciative for any help that can be sent my way! Also I have the haynes manual and a parts book but they don't really offer much help in the way of obtaining a new mixture screw.

Before syncing you need to check valve clearances and xj4ever is the place to get your carb parts. Their logo is in the top corner.

Thanks, I found the parts I need! In the manual it says I need a special tool to hold the special tool, part number 90890-01245 to do the valve clearance check or that it is possible to fabricate a suitable substitute. Anyone have a suggestion or advise on that?

I just finished mine today....although I bought the "special" tool...I prefer the
"Zip tie method" (although I don't use a zip tie...I use an old vinyl coated clothes hanger)....this time around it only took me about an hour, start to finish, to check both the clearences and the actual shim size....practice may not make perfect...it has made me much quicker.
