So I did a Intruder Bobber this past winter and sold that! Now I have found a XJ700 1986 model for....get ready...$175.00. And it runs with no rust other than the chrome pipes and a little on the chrome part of the fork tubes. The guy took the carbs apart and could not get it running right. Obviously you need the YICS tool to do the sync and also knowledge of carbs. I own my own Motorcycle/ATV shop so I am good to go in that department. Now I am torn as to whether I want a bobber or a cafe bike. I am not big on plastic bikes but love the power. I really like cafe bikes because they just look sweet but I have never ridden one and am not sure how they are for long distance. I love a bobber and would rather go that route, however I am worried that it will sound like a crotch rocket which to some gives a "whimpy" sound to a beast looking bike. I know that these jokers are fast and hold their own. How does it sound with the mufflers off and just tips on the end. I think I will do a 45 degree tip on the end of each pipe. Therefore haveing 2-1 on the left and 2-1 on the right. Just wanted to step in and say hi, I am now an XJ'er.

    Welcome!

The geometry appears (to me, not from experience) all wrong for a Cafe bike, esp in the later Maxims... I think that the 84/86 year maxims would make a sweet bobber bike.

Looks sharp! I'd be curious to see what you do with it!

I believe I will be doing a bobber. I just cannot give up my bobber likeness. I have added a picture of my last build. It was night and day difference. I built the orange one out of a regular Intruder 750 that was maroon. I built the white one out of a 2003 Intruder 800 it was a friends bike. I think I am going the same route with this bike but with a wrap around rear fender.

I think you'll have a louder bike, but you won't have as much power if you remove the mufflers. I don't recommend it.

Also, you don't NEED to have the yics tool. You can get it pretty darn close without it. I have one, but to date have never used it, more has anyone overused one at any of the Carb clinics. You can do just fine without it.

Ate there any suggestions for mufflers that run 2 to 1 and give a more aggressive tone? And thanks for the info on the tool. That's good to know, I have always used one on the bikes with yics.
