    I guess this would be a good way to introduce myself. I recently bought this project bike 1980 which is a xj550 partially bobbed. So first day I get it I made a gravity tank due to the tank having rust. Anyways I get fuel going to the carbs and have a leak from the breather pod. I'd imagine a stuck float. I tear into the carbs and find this. As seen in pic one. Question is what is the name of the part I'm missing can't seem to find it anywhere!!

    You mean the slides or the pilot air jet?

    Exploded Mikuni

    There's a link to the exploded view of the carbs.

    The carb in the pic doesn't look like a Mikuni.

    The bike in the pic doesn't look like a 550. I see a pivoting-type brake caliper, a non-YICS motor and what appears to be shaft drive.

    That would make it a 650; which would mean you have Hitachi carbs.

    Oh man!
    What else is missing in those carbs!
    Shoot us some more pics of the bike and check your vin and title for the correct bike so we can get you on the road for parts!

    Vin matches the title and title says 1980 xj550r. Which is really a 650cc bike.
    And it's a shaft driven. What other pictures are you guys needing?

    Those are Hitachi carbs, as evidenced by the air jet "cover plate" that was used on early versions of the HSC32-series (Hitachi) carbs.

    You are missing:

    - the vac piston with its rubber diaphragm
    - the vac piston spring
    - the main jet needle
    - the main jet needle spring
    - the main jet needle spring retainer plastic cap

    The bike appears to be a 1980 or 1981 XJ650 Maxim. Post the VIN or look here to decipher:

    Does anyone know where I can get these parts?
    Also the shifter appears that it needs work I can get it into first and neutral, but doing so the shifter appears to be weak. If that makes sense. I'm new to bikes and I figured I'd but this as a project.

    Um...no.

    A 550r:::
    http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e309/ ... 550r-1.jpg

    A 650 Maxim:::
    http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/pictures/1 ... z5A6vldW8A

    All 550s were chain driven.
    The 550 was 525cc
    The 650 was 653cc
    The CCs were cast into the front center of the motor, near the exhaust outlets for #2 and #3 cylinders.

    I concur with Chacal on the year/model. Check the VIN on the frame to match the VIN on the motor. If you need help deciphering the short VIN, post it here and we can help.

    Any parts you need just email "info @ xj 4 ever . com" without all the spaces.

    It's even more complicated than that.

    You have to be careful even betwixt different models of XJ650.

    The YICS motor intake manifolds have a //\\ orientation;

    The non-YICS manifolds are ////

    And they're not interchangeable with the XS's parts.

    No. Your 1980 has a pre-YICS motor; the 1982 and '83 650 Maxims had YICS motors. The cylinder heads are different.

    Why do you feel a need to swap cylinder heads?

    The bolts broke as I was removing the carb joints and attempted to drill and retap them but figure it'd be easier buying a new head
