Hello ! New guy on the block and I'm totally impressed with this site. I've visited it a few times before buying my '81 650 Maxim and decided to become a member now that I own it. It needed some cleaning, new tires, and the front brakes flushed. I modified the seat, and I'd like to give her a paint job soon. It could also use carb boots. Here's some pics!

Thanks for the welcome! I guess my first question is has anyone heard of putting a thin coat of silicon on carb boots that are cracked? If so any suggestions on what brand and type??

Yes, I just did this last weekend. I removed each carb holder boot. Cleaned it, rubbed black RTV into all the cracks. Than I cut a piece of bicycle inner tube too stretch over the boot. I put a pin hole on each one to stretch over the vacuum ports. Let it all dry, than I painted them with some plastic/rubber paint to make them look neat.

I did not come up with the genius repair. Some other XJ member posted it a while ago.

Not as good as new, but I need to watch how much I spend on this motorcycle.

Why did you use the bicycle inner tube pieces? I was told you could just use the silicone but now you have me wondering if the way you did it would be better. And thanks for the suggestion!!
