XJ750 carbs (Hitachi) - list of fasteners?

Hey all,

I'm looking to head over to my local fastener store and pick up SS and/or hex head versions of all the fasteners for my carb rebuild.

I have searched, without success; has anyone put together a comprehensive list of fasteners for the Hitachi carbs? Thanks in advance.

I'll definitely be going to Len for parts in the future; but I need my kitchen table back, so the carbs have to go back together *today*! Aah, the joys of being single.

 

it's not a good idea to use stainless fasteners on aluminum. these two particular metals have serious corrosion issues when mated together. zink plated fasteners are a better choice. either way a good coating of anti-sieze is recommended and don't forget to use a torque wrench to prevent over tightening.

The fastener sizes are listed there next to the part numbers if you would like to go another route. I did not use splitwashers, i have never used them on any other carbs (mostly MX) and have yet to have a problem.

I have been toying with the idea of custom order cadmium plated socket cap screws, in sets. Anybody have any interest? Zinc plated is better then SS but cadmium plated hardware is the best option for the application.

 

i'd offer you some split washers but their stainless and they might make your carbs fall apart

 

I am as confused as an Amish guy in a Radio Shack store . . .

I believe even Chacal offfers stainless steel fasteners, yet I have heard (read)twice in the last week that aluminum and stainless are not compatible and there will be a corrosive effect that is really bad . . .

IS stainless safe?
Should it be used with Anti-Sieze?
Regular or Copper Anti-Sieze?

 

i've had them in mine since the first time i took them apart, 3,4,5 years ago, long time, and saw no ill effects when i had them apart a few weeks ago.
i think the only original bolts left on mine are the 3 long ones on the alternator cover and the valve cover special bolts. everything else is stainless.
i might have used anti-sieze on some of the case covers once but not as a habit. never on the carbs. what a mess.
once over a buffer and their better than chrome

You don't have to worry about a Stainless Kit causing you trouble.

I've have Stainless Kits on both Bikes.
Serviced client Carbs substituting the cheap OEM's for Stainless without complaint.

In my not-so-humble opinion, ... I think the issue of Galvanic Corrosion causing harm is a bit overstated.

Ask the troops who run stainless.
They make the next time you have to clean carbs easy.

 

The corrosion issue is not severe. But overtime corrosion of the carb bodies will take place which can result in the fasteners galling into the base metal. Antiseize will diminish the effect.

Those of us who care or whom know better, avoid using stainless steel fasteners in aluminum.

The factory hardware is cadmium plated steel.

Split Washers don't belong anywhere near a car or a motorcycle. They are being done away with industry wide.

 

Copper will embrittle aluminum over time. Save it for an iron head engine.
