I am going to replace the float needles on my carb set. The float seats looks perfect, in my opinion, no need to replace. But I read somebody elses post where they refered to dressing the seats. I am not sure how this is accomplished, but if anybody knows, please let me know.
    Thanks

don't quote me on this, but I remember reading somewhere about rounding off the tip of a wooden dowel, putting that in a drill and using it to buff the seats. I have no idea how safe or unsafe this is, I just have a vague memory of reading it somewhere.

If they need any attention, take a Q-tip with some metal polish and spin it in there. You just want to be sure there are no concentric "wear rings" in the seat. Smooth and shiny is fine; smooth with rings not so good.

Not sure about the XJ....but all other bikes including other Yamaha bikes recommend the replacement of both as a unit only.

I tried the Qtip Method. I chucked up a Qtip in my cordless drill and dipped the Qtip in Brasso. Spun it on High speed for a little bit. The seat and the bore shined like a mirror.

    I am good to go.

If your needles are shot don't take a chance on your old seats. It is worth the piece of mind knowing. Also depends on the bike my maxim x after you pull out the screw so you can get them out there is an oring where it goes into the housing we all know what ethanol does to oring's. These carbs are to hard to get on and off to take a chance. You can set your floats till the cows come home if the oring is leaking your wasting your time.
