Need help restoring a 1981 XJ650H Maxim to stock

Sorry, I posted this to the wrong forum earlier...

I just picked up an '81 XJ650H in fantastic condition. I cleaned and sync'd the carbs and now it runs fantastic too. The only problem is that the former owner modified the seat, rear fender, tail light, and signal lights to make it look kind of Harleyish. I would like to get it back to the stock look which I think is much better. I have acquired most of the parts to do the job but I think the former owner cut out a cross member on the frame about a foot from the rear end of the frame tubes. I'll upload some photos as soon as I can. I guess what would be most helpful is some close up photos of that cross member from different views so I can fabricate one. From what I can tell from the stock parts is that the seat, the plastic rear fender, and the chrome rear fender all tie into that piece. This is a great site and thanks to anyone that can help me. (BTW, I have ordered the XJCD)

 

Do you have any pics before you started trying to restore it? I'm curious what sort of mods the PO did.

 

I should have taken some before pics but I didn't. Of course I can always slap it back together the old way and post some pics if that would help. It really didn't look too bad. The problem mainly was the seat - a real small teardrop shaped seat for one. I did post three pics to my gallery to show where I'm at now. Maybe that will help.

 

Actually I'm just wondering what he did to the fenders. What color are they and what do they look like? Anyone know if they'll fit on an 82 maxim 750.

 

I'll post some "before" pics to my gallery so you can see what it looked like when I bought it. If you really like the appearance I'll sell the whole works to you (fender, seat, tail light, signal lights) for cheap.

I dig it, can you fit the stock seat on there with that fender? PM me with what you want for the setup if you're wanting to unload it. Does anyone know if that will fit on an 82 xj750 maxim? Also does the crossmember need to be removed for that to work? I'm not interested in doing any major modifications like that...

 

Actually second thought I'd have to remove my grab bar and I'm just not sure how the rear shocks mount and such. I think I'll pass as it seems like quite a project for a simple tinkerer like myself Thanks anyway, And thanks for the pictures, gives me some good ideas.

 

You would have to remove the cross member to be able to mount the stuff shown in my pictures. That was the big deal in mounting the stock parts back on the bike - I had to find and reattach the cross member.
