So I read just about every post about wet setting floats. I understand that they must be horizontal from left to right, but what about from front to back?
On the bike they sit on an angle. On my PVC stand that I am building, should they sit perfectly level?

So that wasn't a stupid question, but are floats always set with the carbs off the bike? Just wondering.
    Thanks
    Tom

Even on the bike, the book says check the carbs when they're level... in other words, prop up the front wheel. :)

As I'm sure you've noticed, it's much easier to get to the bowl drains when the rack is on the bench rather than on the bike, so that's where the wet setting usually gets done.

I do a dry set, at an angle so that the tang just touches the float needle, but does not compress it.

Then the wet set on the bench with a "carb buddy"

(Do a search for that term, as I caught some grief from these clowns, on here! I put up some pics. And yes, it did look funny, and I deserved the ribbing! But the carbs are perfect!)

What I am wondering: If the carb rack should be level in all directions instead of tilted like it is on the bike.... why should we hold the transparant tube centered on the side of the float bowl? The measure would be equal on any position at the side. Is that perhaps an indication that it should be measured in tilted position?

Nope. It's just that much more representative of what's going on at the approximate location of the fuel pickup point.

The float levels should be checked with the carbs level in all directions. http://www.xj4ever.com/setting%20fuel%20levels.pdf

I "pad" my bench vise with cardboard and carefully clamp the rack in and level it up; most folks build some sort of fixture to hold the rack. PVC pipe or screwing a pair of old intake manifolds to a board are both popular.
