Hi. Can someone please tell me if a xj550 maxim tank is identical to a 650 maxim tank. My 650 maxim tank is no good internally and I have found a 550 for sale online. Cheers

NO, they are NOT the same.

The 750 maxim tank is a direct bolt-on, though, and gives you more fuel capacity, too..

So the mounting for the 750 is identical to the 650 ??.

Is it physically a much bigger tank than the 650. ? Is it the same shape?

    Cheers

    Hi JC,

I don't know what your skill level is, but there is a product called POR15, that is used to clean, prep and coat the inside of gas tanks, that will return you tank to new. Google it, as I don't want to advertise on this forum. The maker will sell you the kits directly.

But do the inside, BEFORE you finish the outside. You will be messing with some righteous chemicals!!

Once the inside is done, find out how much you will be charged to get the outside powder-coated. Makes for a really tough finish against gas, and looks really good too!

I've just discovered the same problem on my bike! there are some pretty good rust patches on the inside, the fuel that came out looked like mud mixed with peeled paint. Will POR15 save my tank?

Yes, I believe it will, if there are no holes rusted through! LOL

If you do have holes, clean it out completely of all remnants of gas, and have a metal man fix it for you.

    Then POR that puppy!!

My biggest issue is the current tank had a tank liner in it. That liquid liner stuff. Now it is all peeling and flaking off internally. Not sure if I can do anything about this. ?

I believe one of the POR products will take the lining out, but check their website to make sure.

The 750 maxim tank has ALL mounting points IDENTICAL to the 650 maxim. It is a drop on and go upgrade. The tanks a gallon larger. It is slightly taller and wider. It give the bike nicer visual "line" too... If you want to see one, go to my gallery and take a peek at the full dress 650maxim-- that's a 750 maxim tank on it. Many people here have done that upgrade.

Yes, there is a kit, fro POR that will strip that KREEM liner, or any liner.

I am about ready to do another tank for Rosie, or ebay!

    Acetone removes Kreem.
