I got my xj550 running great and have been very busy riding it a ton, I was just looking to see what other people are getting for speed and rpms on their 550s. I am a big man by traditional standards I am vey tall and 240 pounds so I imagine that must have an influence on the performance of my little bike lol. I like to breeze past 6grand but am not sure how far she will go? What say you??

6,000 is almost where the power begins. The 550 makes peak horsepower at redline and will ride at 7500 all day long as long as it is in proper mechanical condition.

My 650, is the same! Runs great just north of 5K, and has NO problems revving to 9k. Too bad the speedo only goes to 85! LOL

I have buried that needle, before!! And she is just as smooth!!

Gotta agree on this (as most of us know) these motors LOVE to rev! I just got my 550 last fall and since getting it ridable this spring it's been my go to bike over the 650. Revs freely to it's redline, sounds amazing doing it and with the 6 speed gearbox you can go through the gears keeping it in that sweet zone above 7k!

Kaz mentioned the most important factor: the engine has to be in a proper state of tune then you can run it to redline anytime you want and run at 7200 ~7500 RPM all day long and never even break a sweat.

On the 550s, the powerband doesn't get serious until 6K; then from there on up it makes more horsepower with every rev until it peaks at 10K RPM. The 550 makes its maximum horsepower AT redline.

But it has to be properly tuned or you'll quickly blow it up.

There's a fix for that too.

How about the XJ750R, whats the rpm consensus on it? I think I might be a little confused on exactly how I am veiwing my rpm's.

It's pretty much the same deal. It pulls all the way to redline (and beyond if you aren't careful), and is really coming alive at 6k.

I haven't had mine out much lately (it's wind season here, plus I've been having fun on my friend's Virago before having to deliver it next weekend), but I recall the engine being at close to 5000 RPM at 70 MPH, which it will happily do all day long.

I doubt he's selling anything looking like these, but he may have the internal pieces to make your own.

Fitz bought NOS off eBay, I bought used off eBay.
