    Hey y'all,

Due to a PO's hacking of the upper steering column, I think I might need to ditch the Atari. No loss, it's the ugliest thing since Phylis Diller.

    I love Raven's thread

But if I didn't want to get quite that fancy / clever (since I'm an idiot with electronics)... Is there an XJ650 / XJ750 / earlier Seca cluster that might work with minimal jiggery-pokery?

    Something like THIS maybe?
    Thanks,
    Duncan

the ebay option looks like your best bet, but you may have to mate up a corresponding wiring harness. or do a lot of research and custom splicing.

Yup... But should I be looking for a cluster from anything in particular? Did I read somewhere that the Secas have an electric (i.e. non-mechanical) tach? If I'm going to be poaching from a Maxim / XS, what year(s) should I be looking for?

I've replaced my tach and speedo with some shinys from Dime City Cycles.
I've got an XJ550 Seca with mechanical tacho.

For lights, I cut up some spare aluminium and jammed some LEDs in it.
really easy to sort out the wiring, but yes you do have to do some jiggery pokery in the headlight bucket.

    so-
    1.9" Speedo - 2240@60 mph
    1.9" Tacho - 1:5ratio
triangular wedge of aluminium from an old imac stand
4x LED 5mm 12V LED with chrome bezel

LED wiring - positive leg is bronze so..
left indicator: dark brown + / black -
right indicator: dark green + / black -
    Neutral: chocolate + / pale blue -
Oil: red with white + / black with red - (check the wiring diagram on the xj wikidot just in case)
the red comes from the starter switch (and the coils)
the black goes to the diode and then on to the oil pan.

    Instruments
reg can go to chocolate i guess, black is black
black goes to the bike frame to complete the circuit going back to the battery

    voltmeter & fuel gauge..
I've taken these out of the original cluster and I'll get round to making matching 1.9" cans for them

I have a 750 SECA and it has an electronic tach.
I put J&PCycles "Mini" gauges on mine and like them, decent gauge for a sane price.

Nice, guys... But I think I'd rather stay with (closer to) stock... Seems to me like either the Maxim clocks or the earlier (dual round) Seca 750 clocks could be made to fit, BUT the tachs are all mechanical. Is there a way of driving a mechanical tach with the '83 engine?

True, and *slightly* less ugly than the Atari... ;-)

Previous years of Maxim and Seca 750 had mechanical tachs tho, right? So I must be able to retrofit a mechanical tach cable onto a '83 bike? Anyone have the correct part number, part name even? A photo?

Thanks Vespa... But I'm really looking for a traditional, dual gauge look (think vintage Kawa, Honda CB, Yamaha XS).
