Hi all. I am changing the gauges and such on my 82 XJ750 Maxim to the round style as used on the 80-83 650 and 83 750. I know I will have to get a mechanical tach drive cable, but I am unsure of where it mounts at the engine. Can someone post a pic of where this tach cable attaches?

Being that it's an 82, are you sure that it's mechanical? If you're current gauges are electrical, then you still need electrical tach. If your current tach is cable driven, then all you have to do is hook the cable to the new tach.

In any event, if you are switching to a cable -driven tach, the port for the cable is on the front of the engine on the head between pipes 3 and 4. If you can't find it, pm me and I'll send a pic of where it is on the earlier 650's

Speedo is mechanical. Tach is electrical.

Yep, Hogfiddles pointed that out to me. The 81 gauge cluster I bought it as close to ment as one could find, but I didn't know at the time that I would have to have an electrical tach. So...I bought an ok set of 83 gauges for twice the price, and when it arrives, I will take the faces and covers from the 81 and put them on the 83 unit. I just hope that I can get the needles off without breaking them, as that is the only real challenge in disassembling a gauge cluster.

So will the 83 gages work directly on the 82? I also plan to replace the square gages and head light on my 82

They are not plug and play. Some re-wiring will need to be done, but they will work.

LV, I hadn't planned on selling the old cluster. However, I wouldn't mind helping out a fellow XJ'r. One of the reasons I am changing other than personal preference is that the outer case is broken on the right front side of the cluster. But, everything on the unit functions properly and is in good order.

I know how you feel about giving up the 650, they are fun.

one is +, one is -, the other is signal from the - side of the coil. that's the side that goes to the TCI, and might be a gray wire but not sure
