Just picked up a rebuild kit for 1982 seca 750. the bolt that goes to one of the brushes has a plastic piece and a few paper washers. Not sure what order to put things in. Im guessing this bolt isnt supposed to touch the starter housing?

You are correct, that is the positive lead to the starter. It must be fully insulated from the starter housing.

That's correct. The bolt is where the POS cable runs to the starter. The plastic piece and washers are to keep the wire from touching the starter housing and frying the internals (and quite possibly a bunch of other electrics).

The plastic piece should be first, to center the bolt in the hole. Then it's just a matter of stacking the fiber washers so that the cable doesn't touch the housing.

ok, so it is possible to fry the starter armature? When I check the resistance from the battery neg to the frame/engine i should have resistance yes? if no reistance my starter is bad or is it just the pos bolt touching the starter housing? One more question, if the POS isnt supposed to touch the starter housing, but the bolt is connected to the brush that touches the brush mount which touches the starter housing...see where Im going with this?

"When I check the resistance from the battery neg to the frame/engine i should have resistance yes?"
    no, or very very little.

" One more question, if the POS isnt supposed to touch the starter housing, but the bolt is connected to the brush that touches the brush mount which touches the starter housing...see where Im going with this?"
+ to the bolt...to the brush....that touches the brush holder that is insulated from ground....thru the + brush, thru the armature... to the - brush that is connected to ground....and away we go

If the bolt is touching the housing it completes the circuit at the bolt instead of following the path through the armature like it's supposed to.

    That's all, just metal ?
I'm thinking you haven't looked at yours yet, I'm also thinking when you do you'll
Be smart enough to see how it works.
There should be no connection between the brush holders, that's your assignment
Figure out how they do that
