If I understand correctly, the coils generate a redundant spark so I have assumed it shouldn't matter which cable goes where as long as the right hand side (grey feed) serves 2@3 and the left hand side (orange feed) serves 1&4. I feel I need to check this logic as the bike is not starting and just backfiring really badly.

The coils should be interchangeable; and yes, one fires 1/4 and the other 2/3.

As far as whether or not you have the grey wire and the orange wire transposed I can't answer since I'm at work and have no access to "peek" at a bike.

Great thanks bigfitz, a bit more checking and found a bad connection on one of the coils so now firing on all four. Not out of the woods yet, this bike is a nightmare not helped by me making mistakes all the time through lack of experience (I probably burnt out the old coil by checking for sparks and leaving other plugs out and not grounded) good progress today anyway.
