running rich on cyl 1

    Just did valve adjust .. Carb clean and balanced ... Put in new plugs ... Cyl 2 3 4.. Seem lean... 1 is rich... Carbs not balanced? Float not set right? Weak spark? Where to start

    Have you adjusted Pilot Screw? What Bike / carb are you working on?

    Floats would be next guess .....

    sorry 82 xj650 maxim yics

    i assumed the mechanic did it when he "synced" the carbs
    step 1 of carb sync ... set all air mix screw to 2.5 turn if i recall


    which i am beginning to question... they didnt notice that it had the wrong plugs .. but then again neither did I.. the plugs that were in it NGK BP7HS and not NGK BP7ES

    the HS are about half inch shorter thread then the NGK BP7ES

    Everyone believes that 2.5 turns up is the starting point. Adjusting this one way or the other allows you to tune in rich or lean.

    Turning it out to 3.5 (example) will make it more rich. Very small changes will make a difference.

    However, as a disclamer ........ I've been fighting with my #1 carb for a year now. So anything I write should be taken with a grain of salt and I assume no responsibility for my words. My bike knows this well.
