I am fitting the carbs back onto my FJ600 and I am having a heck of a time getting the Air Box Boots and Clamps to stay on the back side of the Carbs. No matter how tight I clamp the boots on, they eventually slide off, almost like the back of the carbs are tapered (they are not).

Does anybody have any suggestions? I am thinking I am going to use automotive hose clamps, hopefully the cut outs for the screw drive will help grip the vinyl/rubber boots.

Secondly, how sealed do the boots need to be? I know I don’t want dirty air seeping in, but will some air leaking in effect the jetting of the carbs? From reading other posts, It seems like the free flowing pods require a jetting change.

Those boots shrink over time. I had to replace them on both my XJ's. I couldn't even get them on over the carbs on my Maxim-X.

If you can get them on, I'm surprised the clamps wouldn't hold. Are you loosening the air box and pushing it forward? Does the FJ have this? Mine have 1-2 clamping screws on the air box.

There's your answer. I've had a couple (and only a couple, spread over two 550s) that shrank to the point where they would continually "creep" back off. Replacement solved the problem.

Yes, they definetly shrank. I tried to find NOS but no luck. The FJ's used a unique rubber boot (2 years only).

What about an air leak at the boot issue?

    Thanks

Boil them and see what happens. Just boil some water in an old pot, and throw them in. Turn off the heat after a couple seconds and just let them sit.

Automotive clamps hold more tightly, but not evenly. There are other styles of clamp which do both...

    Like similar to these:

Those are kinda wide though, and not the right size...

I can steer you to an NOS source for the outer pair; apparently the inner two are somehow different than the outer two.

    #1 and #4: 49A-14453-00-00 (found some)
    #2 and #3: 49A-14463-00-00 (still looking)

    PM if interested.
