the side stand relay is tied into the side stand itself. it may need cleaning. your bike should shut off if the side stand is down and you shift from neutral. the neutral switch connects into the clutch handle similar to the way the rear brake switch connects to the front brake handle.

there's no separate "kill" switch, the side stand switch, neutral switch and clutch switch, work in conjunction with each other via the safety relay, to do exactly as you say.
side stand switch is on same frame bracket as the side stand
neutral switch, should be behind shifter cover
clutch switch is under clutch lever
safety relay, dunno for sure but maybe under tank, near flasher relay

I love this. It's like the old proverb about the group of blind men and the elephant.

Guys, NOT ALL XJs ARE IDENTICAL!

The sidestand switch is on the sidestand bracket on the 550/600s; but on some of the shaft-driven bikes it's tucked away under the case.

Not ALL models have a separate sidestand relay; some just have the switch but the overall operation is essentially the same.

The "kill" switch is that big "OFF/RUN/OFF" switch on the RH handlebar pod.

The safety relay also tends to be located slightly differently between models.

To Gary, bigfitz and others...,thx for the site info of Chacal's wiring forum. The guy's a genius and I hope he doesnt have to do his own typing.

Lots of studying and learning still left on the xj650 for me to conquer.
Back to lying on my back on a cold concrete floor to sort problems out(lol)
Gonna make 1 good bike out of the 2 i got.
    thx

But he's not in the 'States. His '81 XJ650 is more akin to our '82 Seca 650 than to the '81/'82 Maxims sold here.
