I was wondering what my rpms should look like at 60 mph? It seems like i've lost some power recently and I'm only pulling about 4500 rpm at 60. Seems like bike my doesn't want to rev very high. Also feels a bit sluggish, I was thinking it might be time to clean the carbs. Any suggestions?

Or you air filter. Dirty air filter will do this to a motor

How many miles on it; and more importantly how many miles since you last checked your valve clearances?

18.6k miles. I haven't checked the valve clearances yet, I've read your write-up I've just been kind of scared to do them myself. Guess i'll get a buddy and get on those ASAP.

The reason i ask is because at 60 mph my bike usually sits at 5k or right over. I got on the other day and went for a ride and noticed my rpms were running lower then normal and accelerating is a bit sluggish. I can tell I'm losing power compared to how it has normally run. Just trying to figure out where to look first.

I'm with Polock, regardless of the power issue, the rpm's should not change.

I'm wondering if you have a fuel delivery issue--clogged inline fuel filter, trash in carbs, etc.

Also, do the valves and BigFitz suggested. It's not hard, but if you need shims it may take a few days to get them. So, no reason to get in a hurry.

Check your local bike shop for the shims. 2014 Kawasaki klr 650 uses 29 mm shims. Make sure to bring your digital caliper to check for the correct sizing. They are not all perfectly sized.

Or do what I did last month, and bring the old shim with you. I had a 275 and needed the 270. The dude brought out a 270, but it was a 29.5. The difference in my fingers was like a nickel to a penny.
We only determined it was a 29.5 after I showed him the diameter diff., and he measured it then.

When he found a 29, 270 it was a perfect match in diameter holding with my fingers.
