I just bought my first 82 xj650 off of a local guy for 350.00 it runs good but need a few minor things like the electric when I push the screw (thats whats there instead of the button) all I hear is a click instead of it starting. Also the turn signals are a little funky the left one works fine but the right just stays on and wont flash but I think the front turn signal is blown. I also have to get new handle bar controls for it they are worn out. I also am trying to get built up grese and oil off of the engine outside I noticed a little smoke coming from it when I drove it home. Also have to replace the horn. If anyone has any advice or helpful tips please let me know.

I was going to say starter solenoid but if the signals are wonky it might be a low battery.

Welcome to the site! Congrats on joining the XJ club. These are great bikes if you don't mind getting them in shape and maintaining them. There are tons of valuable posts here, and you get get parts (and quite a bit of info) from XJ4Ever (user Chacal).

There are a few key things you'll want to do... check the rear brakes for a delamination issue, check the valve clearance, put the carbs through the "church of clean" and replace the stock fuse box if it's still there.

chazmati, can you explain about replacing the stock fuse box? Is there some defect or something? I also recently bought an 82 XJ650 so I'm curious.

    Yes. There is a defect.

The metal of the clips holding the fuses loses springiness and gets brittle with age, not holding fuses tight any more. Loose fuses make for strange electrical gremlins.

If you try to bend the clips you can break them because they are brittle. Or, they can break on their own. I had this happen on my 79 XS, and had to get home from work without lights.

The clips actually crystallize over time, and do often break all on their own. Any attempt to squeeze them tighter will invariably break them.

The "best" fix is to retrofit to a modern blade-type fusebox. If you prefer to maintain the stock configuration, the original fusebox can be rebuilt with new clips (Radio Shack) or XJ4Ever has OE-style replacements.
