I'm looking for a set of Maxim-X exhaust header pipes in reasonable shape for a project. I care more about functionality than cosmetics. Basically I want to weld in a bung for an M12 wideband O2 sensor (or four) and use the set for tuning.

Does anyone know if pipes off an '83 XJ750 would fit? I found a set on eBay, part numbers are similar: 1AA-14611-01-00 for the XJ700XN versus 5G2-14611-00-00 for the XJ750K.

The part of the part number that is similar is because they're the same "application" (ie; pipe #1, pipe #2, etc.) the part that really matters is the model number prefix.

For instance, a 4G0-14611-01-00 (from a 550) is NOT the same as a 5G2-14611-01-00 (from a 750.) Another good example is tank badges. They're almost all MMM-24161-XX-XX and MMM-24162-XX-XX yet there is a world of difference between a 4G0-24161-XX and a 3X0-24161-XX.

So no, they probably won't fit. The "X" motor is tipped forward and has a drastically different fit relationship with its frame than an aircooled 750 does.

The stock head pipes on the aircooled XJs have EGA ports in them already. Doesn't the "X?"

    Thanks Fitz, good info.

My existing headers have the EGA ports, but they're too small for an M12 sensor. The pipes are in pretty good shape, so I was hoping for a cheap set of pipes that I could modify without worry, and just use for tuning.

Uh......there's a lot more similarities in the pipes than people think..... there's quite a few that will interchange. There's enough interchanegeability that seriously makes me wonder if Yamaha didn't just stamp different numbers on stuff just to 'designate' stuff for a particular bike.

I've swapped quite a few things around for trials and experimenting, and curiosity.
