It's all in the details. Those dots are a major detail.

Now that you've had it apart and seen how it works, you can see why turning the shaft clockwise until it stops brings the pullrod up against the back of the pressure plate, so that's where it needs to start from. Otherwise the little lever is just "pawing air" instead of working the clutch.

Could if be that the teeth on the clutch basket aren't lined up right with the other gear so it's not spinning also does the bolt that holds the clutch basket on have to be torqued or just tightened

The NUT that holds the clutch basket on very much needs to be torqued to the proper value and a new tab washer installed to prevent it from loosening. Did you read this? http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29541.html It applies to your bike as well, your clutch is just simpler is all.

I'm not quite understanding why you think that the clutch is causing what sounds like a dead battery.

Do you think that somehow the clutch is keeping the motor from turning over?

Rotating what shaft? The crankshaft? The clutch release shaft?

Your torque spec for the clutch hub nut is 52 ft/lb.

Where it says this part THEN, rotate the top of the throwout shaft CLOCKWISE (viewed from above) until it STOPS, and reinstall the lever, return spring and clip

The shaft will rotate with your fingers until it engages the clutch. Was just working on mine last night.

    Take the spring loose first.

Was it WELL warmed up? Even with my latest adjustment, mine is clunky until the oil is hot - normal of course on wet clutch

Also, the adjustment I did this year was to dial it counter-clockwise another spline back so the little pip on the arm is just to the (visual) right of the arrow. The closest to lined up I could get before was just to the LEFT instead of spot-on.

It really helped shifting. This is the post that gave me more info...
