    Hi guys
So I purchased my 1980 yamaha xj650 in November of last year. When I purchased it the owner had not started it nor sat on it for about 20 years. He gave me no information as to why it sat, so I drained all fluids, resealed the gas tank(just in case I can't see everything), cleaned the carbs and bench synced(as described on this forum), added new oil and filter, new spark plugs, replaced front and rear brakes, replaced fuse box, cleaned all electrical connections( save time in the future), new battery and solenoid. Once I finished replacing those items she started right up. I was very pleased with the job I had done. Took her for a ride found a few issues and thanks to this forum they were fixed. Followed instructions on how to dynamic sync and checking valves( in spec). Will post pictures as soon as my phone starts being smart again.

    Welcome aboard.

You're a prime example of what we keep trying to explain to people on here: If you take your time and don't cut corners you will save yourself lots of time, money and aggravation.

    Well done!

Good job. Did replacing the brakes also include replacing the brake lines? And how old are the tires? Not how worn, how old?

It sounds like you're off to a good start.

Did you find this? http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=19538.html Be forewarned, it will need attention within a few hundred miles of putting the bike back in service.

welcome to the club. as you now know this forum is legit for xj's. +1 what they ^ said. you're on track to make your bike a solid runner for years to come and you've aquired knowledge that will be helpful to other members. add to your list: rebuild forks, rebuild petcock, gas cap, replace fuel and vac line and add in line filter. replace wheel, steering and swing arm bearings. just a few things to think about.

Just the pads were replaced I need to get the braided lines. I just got the tires in today and will be replacing tomorrow. I found out today I was running on three cylinders. The issue was a float, the float was in the right position but it was little bent out of shape. When I was setting my floats I had to bend the tang down further than it should have. So when the float was down it still had some pressure on the float valve not allowing fuel to the bowl( worked fine when I was setting the level). That's fixed though. That extra cylinder makes a difference. Must be why there are four. As far as the work I worked with my grandfather in his mechanics shop as a kid, he taught me it's cheaper to do it once.
