I took off the crank case cover to clean, paint and replace the gasket(gasket leaking at the bottom of the crank case) Now it look's great, small problem, where do you fill it? I know the type of gear oil to get. Does it go in the final gear oil fill hole or what? Thanks for the help. Donho

You're talking about two different things.

The crank case cover (clutch cover) is on the right side of the motor. This takes motor oil, not gear oil (usually 20-40w or 2-50w, especially in FL). Make sure it's motorcycle oil. It is filled through the small oil cap on top of the clutch cover. Takes between 3-4 quarts (or liters). You should also change the oil filter while you're at it.

Actual gear oil (80-90w) is what you put in the final drive, on the left side of the rear wheel. This is drained from the bottom bolt of the final drive and filled from the top bolt of the final drive, usually less than a half quart.

OK, I'm totally confused. The cover I took out is on the left side where the gear shift comes out, I took it off, cleaned, painted and replaced the gasket. now I need to know where to fill it. This bike is kicking my back side.

Ah, gotcha. Don't worry, you had me confused too. :?

For the left side engine (crank case) cover you will follow the directions for the clutch cover above.

    Before you start:
Did you drain the motor oil before taking the cover off?

If you didn't drain the oil then you need to put it on the center stand and check the oil level before doing anything else.

Unless you haven't changed the oil in a while, then just go ahead and change the oil and filter.

To clarify a little more: the cover you removed is part of the engine/transmission and as such any oil in there comes from the motor itself.

If you lost oil in the course of removing that cover, you've lowered your engine oil level.

The only thing that gets actual gear oil is the final drive "pumpkin."

If you don't have a manual I suggest you make the investment. The bike will continue to kick your backside without proper references; there are a lot of things about XJs that are counter-intuitive.
