I recently bought a 1982 Yamaha XJ550J that's had some custom work done to it. The problem I'm having is that they chopped the airbox out and put individual filters on the carbs and also put aftermarket 4-1 exhaust on the bike without bothering to re-jet the carbs.

I could re-jet the carbs myself, which is going to be somewhat of a nightmare to get right. I was also thinking that I could buy an airbox online (ebay) and try to install it.

What's your opinion, do you think I should rejet or go for another airbox?

See if you can find a stock airbox on eBay. Pods are a pain to get right. Fitz or some of the other wizards will have the info you need, jet sizes etc...

I agree. Get it as stock as possible. The engineers that designed and built the engine were a lot smarter than we are.

That's what I was leaning towards and I found a nice airbox that's pretty cheap. After reading a lot on the site about re-jetting I figure that even if I get it right it still won't run as well as it would stock.

Does anyone know if it's difficult to replace/install the airbox?

    They probably did.

Re-installing one's not easy but it can be done. You'll need to remove the carbs and the starter and possibly the front engine mounts so the motor can tip forward a little bit.
