New to the forum. New to my new 1985 XJ700N Maxim as well.

She ran great before sitting for 3 years. Put new battery and fuel in her and she started right up. Sounds fine but definitely sounds like she's struggling for fuel and a bit sluggish. I am about to start taking her apart to clean her up - carbs, flush fluids, new spark plugs, etc. BUT...

When she starts up, I have the choke completely open, as she warms up she begins to idle between 3-4 thousand RPMs.

Any advice/pointers as to way this is?

Gummed up carbs.....a real thorough cleaning will help, but if you are going to go through the carbs, replace the throttle shaft seals and fuel rail seals...also make sure your valves are in spec or you will be fighting a never ending battle to get her tuned in...
