Hey all!! I have been lurking here for a couple months reading everything I can on the XJs. I have an '82 XJ1100 Maxim i bought for $1500 about 2 months ago. Guy I got it from said his brother blew the motor. He had a '79 XS1100 and he took the motor from that and put it in the XJ (serial numbers check out). When I got it it ran great but wouldn't idle for crap unless on the choke (enricher) and it was leaking from one petcock and #2 fuel bowl. Long story short, I took it to a shop and had them fix it. Cost way too much and took way too long. Should have done it myself...but it runs great now. Except at idle where the #1 cylinder doesn't always fire. Runs great while riding. I already know, from my research, what could cause that. They "serviced" the carbs, not rebuilt like I had hoped, couple new parts.

I will be going through the carbs completely and looking at the valve clearances. Already talked to Chacal. Brakes work but not like they should, IMHO. SS brake lines and caliper rebuild kits on order. Had to get a front master cylinder cause the mirror turns out was JB welded in, or something, and the threads are gone. Hole was completely boogered also. Have new mirrors and got the original seat for it. Seat that was on it was skinny, ugly and jerry rigged for it.

Been riding it and it pulls hard! Pretty smooth at idle except for #1 cylinder being intermittent and idle creeps up sometimes after riding for a bit. Thanks for all the help so far...you guys know your sh*...stuff!

Just for background. Not my first bike. Started with a 1992 GSXR 750 and modded it out back in the late '90s. Had a 2002 Bandit 1200, bought new, sold about 2 years ago. And multiple dirt bikes. Current dirt bike a '79 Honda XR500, not running now. Getting the parts though but needs a rebuild. And a current member of the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association, Hooah!!

Have to figure out how to post pics :)

Hotcakes, I found that asking is good but the search function works great! Most questions I have had have been asked and answered, multiple times. That's why I have been lurking and not posting.

Still need to get my turn signals working and find a horn. My horn is missing completely. I took off the after market switch for it. Has the original horn switch and wires hanging. Turn signals, my 6 yo decided they were steps to get on the bike and ripped one off. I got new ones and relocated them for the saddle bags to fit. Just need to get them blinking now.

Check you pick-up coil wires to make sure they are not broken. They can cause intermittent fire on the cylinders.

Tcoop, I'll check that out. I think though that the float level causing a lean condition or the idle circuit is partially clogged.

    Welcome Dedbolt.
The easiest way to post pics is to upload them to Photobucket. Then copy the 'direct' link next to the uploaded photo and then paste the link into this dialogue box like this

If you do it this way you are not restricted to photo size and you can post an infinite number without using up your allocation.

I use google photos but couldn't figure out how to post photos from there. Think I'll use photobucket.

I actually got it to work. This is when I first picked it up. Note the ugly seat.
