Oil pours out of my air intake

I have a 1983 Maxim XJ550 and when I went to get it ready to ride this season, I noticed a puddle of oil on the floor underneath of it and when I went to put oil in it to make sure it still ran, which thankfully I decided to do outside, oil poured out from my air intake. I got the bike almost two years ago from a relative who claimed they took very good care of it. I know nothing about bikes but i'm willing to learn rather than pay someone to rip me off. And it's useful knowledge to have. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to why this may be occurring? I took the carb off to check it and it looked clean as a whistle and nothing stuck. I'm at a lost and would appreciate any suggestions.

Is it oil or oil/gas? Open your oil cap take a whiff and c if it smells like gas. Don't run the bike. Also c if your gas tank is empty.

+1 Welcome to the site, monte. Don't assume the bike was well maintained. I used to think I did a good job on my 700, then I came here. Boy, was I wrong. It's not that people don't care about maintenance, they just don't know what's involved. Get a manual.
And don't pay anyone to work on your bike. Chances are they won't know what they're doing.

what used to happen to my bike when that happened was the carbs were slowly leaking fuel into the engine which would seep into the crank, once it was way over full of fuel and oil it would come out of the crankcase vent in the airbox.

the fix is new carb float needles and seats, but it also never hurts to put a fuel shutoff in the line from the tank.

First question is did you check the oil level in the window first? A 'puddle' of oil can easily be a few ounces and look like a gallon.

The puddle could be from a slow oil filter gasket leak, then you topped it off with too much additional oil so it reached the air intake - doesn't take much

    Otherwise check:
    1. Does it smell like gas at the oil fill cap
    2. Was petrooster set on prime, or 'on' (if you set on prime and even one float had was temporarily sticky then it might have leaked fuel)
    3. how long since you ran it last (long time could be a reason for a slow oil filter leak)

Two things can cause your issue:

    -The oil was overfilled.

-You have a carb/float issue which caused fuel to run into the sump, raising the oil level and polluting the gas.

Do as recommended above; stick your nose in the oil filler hole and SMELL. If it smells of gasoline then you have float issues. A leaky petcock only enables the issue; the root cause is a float or floats not working properly.

    Unless you simply overfilled it.
