I'm just curious? My 750 says it redlines at 9000 rpm, but plenty of people seem to think it goes beyond that.

Just curious of other peoples opinions.

    Thanks!

9500. Not a good idea to go past redline. It was an accident: having too much fun and not paying attention...

Id just get a little paranoid at 9500 RPM, a little slip of the clutch and bam! 10,000! Eek!

Free revving I think I went to something crazy like 12k. Probably the same while riding. I bought it to have fun with.

I run my 550 Secas to redline (10K) with great regularity.

I did hit 12K once, also from having too much fun and not watching the tach. It's not something I meant to do nor plan to repeat.

*Note* I wouldn't recommend pushing anywhere near redline unless the motor is in a solid state of tune.

    Probably 10k.

What's the point of (knowingly) going higher? Seems to me the power gets pretty poor at that point.

Or maybe someone out there wants to see how fast they can go in 5th gear?

My 650 redlines @ 9500. I used digihub to clock it on a short run. Had my phone tapped to the tack therefore i could not see it. Fastest speed 92.3 mph with a bit of throttle left. A properly tuned xj will exceed "the ton" long before it hits redline.

@Fitz: you're a experienced rider. Imo you ride faster than many of us and i average 75 ~ 80 mph on the interstate.

    Gary

Edit: @75 ~ 80 mph she's nowhere near redline. Fast enough to feel like i'm doing her justice for how she was built; slow enough to keep Metro off me. Getting tickets suck.

If you guy's are running up to and past red line, wouldn't make sence to just get a bigger bike

Exceeding redline briefly is fine if it is the result of "over exuberance."
Exceeding redline deliberately gets you one of these.
    Piston...
    Meet valve.

By exceeding redline the connecting rod will be forced to stretch due to the rapidly increasing force that the piston bears upon it (the transitional forces at TDC and BDC are huge, and increase exponentially as piston speed increases). Once the rod stretches there is no longer space for all the parts to live harmoniously with one another. Of course before that happens a valve usually floats, staying open when it should already be closed. The same result occurs: valve kisses piston; engine needs rebuilt.

Now this dosen't all happen at the moment redline is exceeded. There is some margin engineered in becasue people are known to make mistakes from time to time. The hard-and-fast rule is that redline can be exceeded briefly, but don't go purposefully running at beyond redline and expect the engine to stay happy for long.

    Yikes!

So 9500rpms on a 750 is about max with a minimum room for error seems to be the consensus?

    Thanks!

    What about member "worldsfastestxj550"

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... xj550.html

claiming 14,000 with a wing-cut and balanced crank, and prolly every other trick in the book.

or that 750 they destroyed, revved to valve-float for 8 minutes or more, at 12,500 RPM. The rods will take an occasional mis-shift.

An engine that is built for going beyond 9k is a whole different animal, and an XJ can be built to do just that.

The 750 from that biker rally is an example of what running beyond redline for an extended period of time does to an engine.

Something like 9-9.5k on special occasions.

Not at all. Besides, a bigger bike probably wouldn't have a 10K redline.

And I don't ride THAT fast. I live in a very rural area, and 80mph is just my "natural cruising speed."

I never thought about the red line as a buying feature.
If you want to cruise at 80 and get there fast, that's what a bigger bike is for and never get near the red line.
I can't see the attraction of going at your cruiseing speed in any but the highest gear

Bigger does not necessarily = faster.

Take the modern iteration of the Triumph Thunderbird as an example. Nearly 800 pounds wet, 1597cc and 85 HP at the crank, 13 second 1/4 mile, and around 120 MPH top speed.

Besides, quicker is whare it's at anyway. Vroom, Vroom.......

I'd have to agree with Fitz......all of my xj's seem to ride most comfortably, at around 80 or so. Smoothest, quietest, etc.......gas economy is best when I stay around 65-68 though...

I've been over 100, but don't enjoy it. Haven't gotten close to redline, though.

While working on my bike, I hit the top of the tach...

WOT + Starter + Full Choke.

I thought I was going to die when it started and went full blast, I was so startled.

I stopped that engine quick. So...whatever the limiter is at.

That's what my Ninja's for. :D It redlines at 11k. It also has a rev limiter but I don't know where exactly that cuts in. Although I don't too often rev it that high. Things are happening pretty quickly up there.

The only factory installed rev limiter you'll find on a bike fom the 80's and earlier, is the engine breaking due to over revving.

Dyna makes a rev limiter, i believe Rick has one, they come up on ebay now and then.

Biggs, did you ever have trouble getting your foot up to the peg from a stop :)

I gotcha. Not really since I've found first gear can make you look skyward quite easily.
I feel like we're hijacking this thread.

Don't remember what my X redline at but I know I've pushed it 2k or better above it. Not meaning to the that more once you get in and above the 7200rpm range really comes alive and in a hurry.
