Hi, nOOb here. I just bought an 1982 XJ650. This is my first street bike and I had a quick question for you smart folks. I did I search and didnt find anything so I hope this isnt one of those questions that gets asked alot but my bike seems to shift kind of loud. It doesnt have problems shifting and it doesnt grid it just makes a loud pop/click noise. I was just wondering if these bikes just shifted loud and it was normal or not?

In all the gears? Or just a clunk into first and a bit notchy from 1st to 2nd?
    Does it clunk going down?
    Clutch adjusted right?

Try a oil and filter change.

    Using the clutch to upshift?

What kind of oil do you have in there?

    And do you have enough?

Put some 20W/50 in it and see if it gets any better!

    Hi black

I've got a 1982 XJ650 engine in my trike and that has a loud clunk going into first, I've not had any problems with it.

    Hope this helps

It does seem to happen most in first to second. I did just change the oil and filter with some Penziol 20W50 synthetic. Kiwi what do you mean by clutch adjusted?

This thread has a guide to adjusting your clutch correctly:

    XJBike thread

It's just to be sure that your clutch is set right.

Alot of XJs seem to be a bit notchy from first to second and neutral to first "clunk"! If you have new oil and it's not too bad or hard to engage or jumps out of gear (esp. second) don't worry, just keep the oil n filter changes regular. She'll go for years.

My 5K mile Maxim X is a little notchy going from N to first and about half that much going from first to second. I'm thinking they are just that way from right out of the box. Make sure your clutch adjustment is correct.

I changed my oil from dino to Redline 20W-50 4 stroke Motorcycle oil and it did help some with the notchyness. Yeah it's expensive, but hey, it's only 3 quarts.

I suspect the driveshaft has something to do with the notchy shifting not as much give in drivline to let things rotate into place as a chain,I know to tight of a chain on a chaindrive bike can affect shifting,I realy dont know but it makes sence to me

    Fine-tune your Clutch adjustment.

Use the Knurl on the Clutch Lever Perch.
    Loosen the Locking thumb wheel.
Turn the adjuster until there NO play in the Lever.

(Yea, yea ... I know the book says a couple of mm's ... don't sweat it)

When you have all the freeplay out ... you'll kiss the clunk, redlight creep and hard finding Neutral problem ... good-bye!
