I have an 86 xj700 and like the title states my headlight will not always stay on. Today when I started the bike up in the morning to go to work no headlight. rev it up a little and still nothing, go back inside to get my jeep keys and come back out, rev it and boom lights up. On my way home from work on the bike the light never came on. Could this be a low battery or am I dealing with something more serious?

Could be alternator brushes, could be a bad connection (likely), could be a bad headlight relay...

First thing I would check is the Molex plug under the left cover that connects the alternator to the rectifier/regulator (bunch of white wires and a few others). You may need to clean up or replace some of those pins (they get hot and oxidize). After cleaning or replacement, you should add some dielectric grease when reassembling the plug.

If those are the original fuse clips, rebuild or upgrade the fusebox.

The original fuse clips crystallize and break all on their own. The fusebox can be rebuilt with new clips; or you can upgrade to a blade-style box.
