I've got a 82 650 Maxim that runs like a top, except for one thing. It has a "chattering" noise to it, that is RPM dependent. I'd liken the noise to change in a tin can, being shaken around. Seems to be coming from the upper part of the engine, near the spark plugs.

I have checked the valves, all within spec. Oil change has been done regularly. This is my first Maxim, so I'm wondering if this is the normal "valve noise" I've heard about, or if I should be looking for something else.

It's loud enough that when I'm driving it, I can hear it easily. And again, it's affected by RPM, but is present even in neutral on the side stand.

Bike has 23k on it, and the PO is the original owner. No maintenance records, but it appeared to be in good shape. Good enough to buy it for 400 bucks at least :D

Thanks again. I'll provide any other info I can, if you need more.

If you have stock exhaust it may be the double wall header. The iner tube maybe loose and rattling.

The PO put a Vance and Hines 4 into 1 on it, so sadly that can't be it. Thanks though!

Go to about the 4:00 mark in this video. The ticking you hear from his engine is normal. Compare that to yours.

that's exactly the tick. I was worried, as to me it sounds awfully loud. So, that's a normal quirk with these models huh?

Now to find a way to get a rear fender back onto this thing. (I can't weld worth a damn, and PO figured he'd make a bobber, got as far as the "I've got a sawzall" stage, and sold it)

    Thanks so much!

You might want to check the cam chain tensioner; and if it's the manual type, adjust the cam chain. Just to be sure.
