    Hi all,
Been trying to diagnose an electrical problem on my 82 Maxim xj650. Looks like it's just the battery! Can anyone tell me part numbers for a decent quality battery for it? I'm asking because my sole transportation right now is bicycle so I'd rather avoid bringing the old one with me to the parts store. This could save me one way carrying a battery in my backpack.

Seems weird that the battery would cause a sudden breakdown but I'm pretty sure it's true. I've gone through a good check list with a multimeter, and being charged all night and the green light showing on my charger, it's only reading 11.8 and when cranking, the prongs at the ignition box only show between 6.5 and 7.8. Even if this isn't the only issue, I definitely need one.
    thanks everyone,
    Scott

The original battery is a 12N12A-4A-1; in a conventional battery most places (AutoZone, Sears, NAPA, etc.,) now cross-reference to some iteration of "12A-A" preceeded by their own identifiers.

any 12 amp hour battery will work, just as long as the + and - are the same left to right. even if their reversed you can make make it work with some creativity and some extra wire.
put your old battery in a plastic bag then put some baking soda in with it before you ruin your backpack. better yet dump the acid in some limestone gravel
