Didn't want to high-jack Rick's thread, so I'll start this one and let everyone know what's going on.
Many years ago, I was diagnosed with Degenerative Disk Disease and a couple of bad disks. I had 2 fusion surgeries, 1 in the neck and 1 in the lower back in "06" & "07". 2 years later, the same fusion surgeries had to be re-done.
Late 2011-Kept having problems, lot of pain. Went back to doctor and had MRI's. Results were 13 bad disk's (upper back to tail bone) and a fractured vertebrae in lower back that was part of prior fusion surgery. Doctor wanted to do another surgery, but since I only had a 40% chance of surviving the procedure due to other health problems, I decided not to do the surgery. The benefits would be minimal and short lived. Without the surgery I would eventually loose the ability to walk.
So in 2012, I applied for disability and blew all my savings and IRA while waiting on Social Security to decide whether or not I was eligible.
2014-After forcing a court decision, the judge approved me and said I should've been approved a year earlier but wasn't because of an error in the paperwork. Nice one huh!
My legs have been getting weaker over the last 3 years, but they are really getting worse now. They have both completely gone out on me 4 times in the last 2 months, If I hadn't been holding on to the basket at the time, my butt would've been on the floor.
Due to the unavailability of motorized carts(due to kids playing on them or adults that are too lazy to walk), I'll have to get my own chair. Then of coarse there's the hassle with carrying the chair with you and transferring everything back and forth. If I'm lucky enough to get a handicapped parking space that some A-Hole that doesn't need it has parked in.

Man, I am really sorry to hear about your condition. I guess we have to count our blessings no matter what they are. I wish you the best and stay strong.

It's folks like you and Rick that help the rest of us so much. We appreciate what you do. We wish you well.
As a side note, my sister has a handicapped placard for her car. She has hearing trouble, not a damned thing wrong with her legs. It irritates me that she has one and others can't get them.

When I'm in Wichita I often see a fellow who has a sidecar on his Yamaha Venture. He rolls his chair into the sidecar, locks it down, and rides off. The controls are on the sidecar.

Sending good thoughts your way man. It would be pretty cool to see you riding some "slightly modified" scooter around. Good luck with everything.

Thanks for the well wishes. It would be nice to have a sidecar rig or trike, would need to be automatic and have a reverse. I think they have a Goldwing that would fit the bill, but hard to pay the monthly payments and insurance when you have to live on 1200 a month.
Cool chair you shared Polock, can't walk but he can drift. Maybe I could get a Silver Bullet setup with my 700 motor.

That sucks. Just ticks me off that we can and are trying to send people to Mars and not spending the tax dollars we need on stem cell and other possible cures to these conditions.

If you get to a point that you need the very best medical care, go shoot a politician.

Take care of yourself and remember, here, on this web board, we are all handicapped by one thing only...these dang bikes... :)

keep the faith and keep your head up..

Hold on there. All scientific research is worthwhile. NASA is currently performing vital research that may well lead to new therapies for people suffering with bone aliments such as osteoporosis. That research is part of the leadup to a manned mission to Mars. The best part of NASA research is that the findings are availble for free to anyone who requests the data.

All scientific funding in the US is woefully inadequate, and has been for decades.

Respectively, I will agree with the fact scientific research is worthwhile and important, however have ya heard about the one, "I am from the Government and I am here to help you?"

My point is selfishly directed to important items in my lifetime and to those people in my lifetime. While I understand the importance of visionaries and future generations, in my little world they really don't matter that much as compared to the quality of life today and now.

We could debate how we got to this point of communication on the internet, however I, nor anyone I have known, been related to, or currently know had anything to to with it.

So with all that being said and digested, yes scientific research is important, but without life now, it really doesn't seem that important.

Not trying to be offensive, just a guy with a viewpoint.
