It seems that cleaning my carbs is inevitable. The bike starts easy and fast and runs great as long as the choke is on. If I close the choke or blip the throttle it will at least stumble if not die.

My question is: is this just a case of dirty carbs or is there more I should be looking for?

The valve clearances are all in spec and the petcock is completely rebuilt thanks to Len (chacal).

Dirty carbs. If NOTHING else, you have some clogged jets.....

    Second the dirty carbs.

Please, if you plan on doing the carbs do a complete dismantle and replace all seals, o-rings, and seats. Take your time and follow the "church of clean" method.

From experience, do it completely and correct the first time, or you will be revisiting the carbs trying to figure out why the bike idles at 5000 rpm or why it leaks gas from the carbs, or you have gas in your oil or it won't run at all.

As Fitz as stated many times, "These bikes reward the owner for precision."

    Hope this helps

    Thanks for the replies.

I intend on doing the complete job the "church of clean" method. I have just been avoiding doing this as the bike ran fine until it had to sit for a year (sad how life gets in the way of things sometimes) unexpectedly.

As is the normal on a 32 year old bike every time i disturb a gasket or piece of plastic it tends to be well beyond its useful life.

I will most likely get chacals deluxe rebuild kit, any suggestions on other parts I am likely to need will be most appreciated.

    Deluxe rebuild kit is wise.
I would also recommend the rubber diaphragm rejuvenator fluid (RnR?).
Get yourself a bicycle inner tube and do THIS.

Take your time and be meticulous.
