I'm in the process of replacing the steering head bearings on the Maxim. My question is how does the air collar (the best description I could think of ) come off of the fork tube?

It just pops off (up towards the top of the tube)....there are two internal O-rings that can become really stiff, some penetrating oil would help.

Thanks Len. I was kind of thinking that but I didn't want to break anything. Then I'd have to send you more money.

Just a few more pictures of the now completed job. The slight head shake is gone and the whole thing feels a lot more solid.

    Old upper and lower balls.

New upper and lower races in place.

New lower bearing on the lower tree.

    Almost back together.

    It's a whole Maxim again.

And a few from the first real ride after the upgrade.

Great looking bike, and beautiful pics! Lake Michigan?

The yellow looks really good on it. You may start a trend. 8)

And, you have convinced me to change to tapered bearings on my steering head. (My 650 Maxim had a NASTY!!! wobble above about 65mph back in the day.)
