81 550 maxim cutch wont disengage

Picked up a 81 550 as a fixer upper last fall. The last problem I've encountered is that after sitting over night the clutch wont dis engage unless I bump start in gear. pull clutch in crack the throttle a couple times and it will release and seems fine after. Do you think this will resolve with use or could something else be wrong. The bike was stored for several years,

You have changed the oil, right?

What oil did you put in it?

The clutch will probably need to be rebuilt, they generally do.

 

Put the bike in first gear, pull the clutch, rock the bike back and forth.

Has the bike been sitting for a while? If so, the clutch's friction plates may have 'stuck' to the steels. I had this happen when I was working on mine after a 10 year storage period.

If that doesn't work, it may be time to pull the clutch apart and replace the friction plates. Sometimes, if they are not evenly oiled for long periods of time, the friction material can swell on one side and not on the other (submersed) side.

 

The friction pads that weren't submerged in oil while the bike sat dry out and become petrified little rectangles of linoleum.

 

Thanks for the info. may have to pull the clutch, But ill do another oil change first to see what happens.
