My indicator switch seems to be able to be pushed like a button. I read that this is to cancel the signal. However when I turn the signal on, make my turn, then press the switch it does not cancel. I must move the switch back to the middle which sometimes ends with me switching too far over and indicating opposite for a moment possible confusing those behind me...

My '82 XJ650 had the same problem. A bit of contact cleaner sorted it out.

Yeah, something is wrong in the mechanism.

If bet it could just use some lubrication.

The easy way is to use silicone lube, and just spray it in the housing. The hard way is to disassemble and use a wire brush/or similar to clean everything really well before reassembling and testing.

The hard way isn't that hard, but I'd try living the switch first.

Your switch is probably full of crud. Remove the controls from the bars on that side and clean it out with electrical contact cleaner, followed with a light smear of electrical switch grease. Once that's done the switch will cancel the signal when you depress it.
