maybe you don't care but if you do.
get a hold of a big piece of shrink tube and put it over the shifter rubber, problem solved

 

I wear boots when I ride; and if I'm going to work, I have the shoes I will wear there in the tank bag or bungee'd on the luggage rack. Or already left at the office.

Said boots have a special little "shifter pad" on the left boot to attend to such things.

Plus they have ankle and shin bone protection.

Think about something: how old are you? Are you one of those guys with his helmet and armored jacket on, but wearing a pair of deck shoes? Have you ever considered what damage even a low-speed incident could do to your feet, ankles, and shins? The difference between boots and topsiders or tennies could prove to be the differnce between whether or not you walk again.

We're NOT invincible. You know that. Sorry for the rant, but I see guys all the time, older than me even, with armored jackets and full-face helmets and DUMBASS footwear. We have to think about these things; we don't heal like when we were 20.

I just make sure that all of my footwear is black.

 

I've been putting a matching black mark on my right sneek.

 

I work at a jail
when I was an EMT I bought a pair of side zip
Original SWAT boots
they are amazing and comfortable
I got stuck in the rain and they got soaked
had to wear my old work boots a few days
they felt slippy and wrong, could not wait
to wear my EMT boots again

 

I second what Fitz said about always wearing boots. I see idiots in flip flops and shorts all the time, here in Cali, riding their crotch rockets. I had the misfortune of crashing on the freeway doing 70mph many years ago. Luckily I was wearing a pair of thick leather boots and leather gloves. The slide that I took down the freeway still burned the palms out of my gloves and a big hole in the side of my boot. Leather jacket and helmet were pretty rashed up too. I walked away. Didn't know I had a broken leg and sternum at the time though. Boy was the road rash down my leg painful. Polock's idea might help keep your boots nice though.

 

That's why I wear black flip flops when riding. :wink:

That one actually makes me shake my head. Seeing people in open toed shoes while riding. I've even seen barefoot. :?

 

Geez you guys some of us can't even afford insurance or a valid MC license, and we are supposed to go out and buy heavy duty boots? My Doc Martens are too expensive to rash up, so my old Chuck Taylor's will have to suffice! They cover my ankles, it's all good.

Kidding, I am ATGATT all the way, I usually feel bad for the gals on the back of bikes in skirts and flip flops, they have absolutely no control over their fate at that point.

 

Like I said, the one that gets me is the obviously reasonably experienced rider, wearing a proper helmet and jacket, gloves, etc.; and deck shoes.

Usually these guys are on a big touring bike of some sort, often with "floorboards" instead of pegs. This must promote some impression of "protection" not provided by mere pegs; but it's a false impression at best. And furthermore, I usually see it with older riders, who aren't trying to "look like a biker" which very well may be why they aren't wearing boots.

And, as I pointed out above, once you pass the half-Century mark you simply don't heal quickly. What might be only "minor scrapes and bruises" to a younger rider could mean true incapacitation to an older rider (such as myself and many of our members.)

 

It seems that some old men are still teens in their way of thinking about their own safety.

Yeah no kidding. I had finally had to admit I'm old, and take appropriate measures. Not that I've ever taken risks with my equipment.

I tore into a Harley rider at a gas station the other day (when I was also on my bike) for not wearing a helmet. The guys was clearly as old as I, if not older. So I waved my helmet at him and said something to the effect of "you're too old to be that stupid."

His answer was "there's no age limit!"

I think he might have been right. There is no age limit on stupidity.

 

His age is defying natural selection, sooner or later it will catch up, one way or the other.

 

When I don't wear my riding boots I wear my best walking boots .

I walk a lot in the woods for my work (more than 10 km a day on a regular basis), so these are pretty tough boots but not too heavy nor too stiff, and they are black so I'm all right!

 

Hospital time just flies by when you're on a morphine drip. Been there, done that.
