Hi, I got a xj700 1985... last week pushing it inside my house I noticed a sound coming from the rear wheel every time its turn...so I took the wheel off, pull it apart changed the 3 bearings inside the wheel mass. the sound disappeared but ones the wheel is in its place I turned by hand and wasn't smooth to turn, it goes only half turn noticing like a bump. I pulled everything apart, even the shaft...everything looks clean and in place no slacks....nothing...installed everything back and the bump and halt turn is still there. Now, this is my first bike with shaft drive so I don't know if this is normal....and I didn't check this before... Any comments? thank you all...
    Rod.

Not normal. Check the u-joint in the big boot at the front left of the swing arm

Andyam6 the wheel turn hard without the brakes.
I removed the boot and its seem to be alepretty clean. I installed he shaft again to check for any play inside the boot and nothing.
Last thing I did was removing the cover where the gears are. Under the same cover are the fittings of the shaft and I saw a bearing but everything looks normal not even wear out teeth in that mechanism.... Any more ideas???

Remove the wheel. Run the axle through the bearings and see if the wheel spins freely. If not then you have a bad bearing (it is exceedingly rare for a new bearing to be bad, but it can happen and they can be damaged during instillation).

If it does spin freely then put it on the final drive without installing the axle. Put the bike in neutral and turn the wheel by hand. If there is binding then the problem is in the final drive, u-joint, middle drive gear bearing, or the transmission (inspect each component separately, beginning with the final drive (don't forget the bearings)).

If it spins easily then remove the brake shoes and reinstall the brake plate and axle. If it now spins freely then there is an issue with brake contact on the drum (adjust your brake rod, check for cracks in the drum).

Also double check to be sure that the problem isn't something silly like the tire catching on a loose inner fender.

To check the u-joint you have to have the shaft out, and manually reach in and flop the joint around to feel for any sticking, catching, or binding. Just looking at it won't necessarily expose the problem.

Thanks K-moe... the only thing I miss is to turn th e wheel again utside the bike in order to check the new bearings. It turned hard once I installed in the shaft without the axle and without the brakes.. In the final drive I checked the bearings and my mechanic checked also and the bearing is ok. The U joint under the boot hasn't any free play... and the only thing left is the bearing in side the side cover behind the gear box... at simply look seems ok... Like I said I don't know since when the wheel is hard to turn by hand 'cause I never check this when I bought it. I checked also if the final shaft get heat up while riding and it's normal not hot at all anywhere... Needless to say I don't want to replace bearings as crazy....

Get Rod, just a thought ..... Are you Sure that you still have the spacer, for the axle, still inside the hub? It's about 2.5-3" . If you don't have that in there, the wheel will bind up when you tighten the castle nut on the axle.

I think I'm going to leave it alone and if it breaks, well I'll fix it...

Unless it kills you when it breaks. Just something to think about.
