So, there's a wealth of information available on this site and, even more so, within the tenured XJ riders on here...but has anyone at any point attempted to make a comprehensive parts compatibility document? I can't help but think of the value it would present to have all this tribal knowledge saved in some document.

I know for myself, personally, an Excel spreadsheet with the model, part and compatible years/models would be incredibly valuable. How much work would that take and, more importantly, has anyone started one?

Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, but for the time being I'm starting one for my bike (1983 Maxim 750). Slowly but surely...

More specifically, how to "USE" the Yamaha parts fiche to quickly cross-reference exact parts and how to find similar parts that differ in finish or color.

    I use this fiche: http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oempart ... ycle/parts

It pretty much eliminates the need for (and provides more thorough info) than any spreadsheet you might create. The only drawback is that a lot of consummable parts are still available, and Yamaha keeps "commonalizing" things that really are NOT.

For instance, the original 550 and 650 Seca tach cables are DIFFERENT lengths; Yamaha now provides the same part number (and part) for both (the longer 650 cable.)

Thanks for the replies, guys. I didn't know about the fiche, so that opens a lot. I work in materials, so it's nice and clear. Thanks for the links - especially yamahapartshouse...it's like Christmas! The only thing that could make it better is if it had CAD-like capabilities (ie: dimensions).

Cross-reference already exists---- it's called "X-ref". Pm me and I'll tell you more.
